Rhode Island's first and only hygiene hub

read our story

Amenity Aid improves the health, social, emotional, and economic outcomes of Rhode Islanders by providing access to essential hygiene products.

Serving all of Rhode Island, we distribute toiletry necessities through our network of direct service agencies, similar to the way the food bank distributes food.

Amenity Aid honored with Rhode Island Foundation's Best Practice Award

Amenity Aid was one of three local nonprofit organizations to win one of Rhode Island Foundation's annual Best Practice Awards.

Sponsored by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island, the award program recognizes outstanding practices by Rhode Island nonprofits in the areas of Collaboration; Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Practices; and Innovative Programming and Service Delivery. It also distributes $5,000 grants to each winning nonprofit.

Amenity Aid earned the Innovative Programming and Service Delivery Award, recognizing a nonprofit organization that has planned, developed, and implemented an innovative program for its community.

Households that cannot afford basic hygiene products cut back on, or sacrifice, food in order to pay for items like body soap, deodorant and shampoo.

Our efforts make sure that no adult or child has to choose between food and hygiene products. That’s because we make sure that local nonprofit organizations like shelters, community centers and domestic violence advocacy groups always have essential toiletries in stock. And when they run low on supplies, they call us.

Demand for hygiene products

One in three low-income American families struggle to afford basic non-food household goods—including products related to personal care. In addition, hygiene products such as soap, toothpaste and deodorant are not covered under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

The result is a struggling population in our communities that face tough challenges. Parents worry that they cannot reinforce healthy hygiene habits with their children because of a lack of toiletry essentials. Common coping strategies such as brushing their teeth without toothpaste or washing without soap, can increase the likelihood of health and wellness issues.

Every day our neighbors choose between food and vital hygiene products. But you can help!

Make a donation right now and we will purchase and deliver toiletries to those who need them the most.

Our one-of-a-kind approach to solving the lack of access to basic hygiene products includes:

Providing items at no cost to shelters
Shelters and nonprofits we serve never pay for toiletries we deliver; we cover all the expenses that we incur in carrying out our mission
Asking shelters what products they need and delivering them
Operating on-demand creates a fair system for all nonprofits we serve and enables us to distribute specifically what is requested by each of our client organizations
Understanding the patrons of the nonprofits we serve
We tailor our product donations to each organization based on the populations they serve (men, women, and/or children) to ensure that we always provide the right product type
Product sizes that work
Offering full, travel and sample size products depending on a shelter’s average length of stay makes sure nothing goes to waste

Testimonials

"Most of the children we serve arrive without the daily necessities of hygiene products. Amenity Aid's donations of these types of products goes a long way towards providing a normal-feeling life for our young clients."

St. Mary's Home for Children

"Often the items we need most are some of the things that are least commonly donated. Amenity Aid makes sure that we always have access to important items that keep our community members healthy, independent, and navigating tough times with a bit more dignity."
Jessica Salter,
Director of Development,
