demand for hygiene products

There are several factors that contribute to the high demand for basic hygiene products. These include the cost, availability of products in organizations where people seek assistance, and the lack of coverage in programs that help those in need.

About this issue

Lack of coverage
Hygiene products such as soap, toothpaste and deodorant are not covered under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
The need is great
Research has shown that one in three low-income American families struggles to afford basic non-food household goods—including products related to personal care.
The risks are high
Common coping strategies used by struggling families, such as brushing teeth without toothpaste or washing without soap, can increase the likelihood of health and wellness issues. We provide toiletries that ensure basic human needs are being met.

Emotional Impact on Struggling Households

Beyond the financial struggle, people report that being unable to provide basic personal care necessities for their families exacts a strong and ongoing emotional toll. Families that forgo personal care necessities experience more stress and decreased self-respect. Individuals experience feelings of personal degradation when they cannot afford basic hygiene items. Parents worry that they cannot reinforce healthy hygiene habits with their children because of a lack of toiletries essentials.

Period poverty

The term “period poverty” is used to describe and bring global awareness and action to lack of access to period products in our most vulnerable populations. Of all the items we provide, tampons, pads and other period products are the most essential. Menstruators cannot go without these products and there are no substitutes available. They are also the most expensive hygiene product we buy and have the shortest life cycle of any product we provide. For example, we can buy four toothbrushes for $1, or, for the same $1, one box of eight tampons. As you might guess, feminine care products are the items most requested by the organizations we serve.
Young girls and women right here in Rhode Island are struggling to afford feminine hygiene products. Make a donation today and we will purchase and deliver feminine care products to a local shelter or community center.
